The Palermo-Montecarlo offshore sailing race is flying towards its 2oth anniversary edition, the wait is growing less than 50 days before the date set for the start: August 19 and the registered boats have already exceeded 25. The twentieth anniversary heralds an interesting edition for the regatta conceived and organized by the Circolo della Vela Sicilia in collaboration with the Yacht Club de Monaco and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda.
This is underlined by the announcement that at the start, the Palinuro ship will be at sea as guest of honor, the brigantine that accompanies the Amerigo Vespucci in training and educational activities and represents one of the symbols of our Navy.
An important and prestigious confirmation thanks to the Italian Navy that accepted the invitation of the organizers by confirming the presence of the training ship, one of the most iconic historic sailing ships of the Italian seas. Also significant and auspicious for the sailing regatta is the motto of Palinuro “Faventibus ventis” (“With the favor of the winds”).
Built in 1931, purchased by Italy in 1951 and renamed Palinuro in homage to the mythical figure of the helmsman who accompanies Aeneas in Virgil’s Aeneid, with its three masts, the black and white striped hull color and the lines of the hull, the ship is unmistakable to cross at sea or observe in port.
Nave Palinuro will be in Palermo on the eve of the regatta and can be visited according to a calendar that will be communicated. It will also be the setting for the traditional press conference with the presence of some of the protagonists of the regatta. Finally, the sailing ship will be in the water off the Golfo di Mondello on the morning of August 19 to watch the start and follow the first miles of the fleet.
The President of the Circolo della Vela Sicilia Agostino Randazzo: “We are honored by the presence of Nave Palinuro. We want to thank the Italian Navy for having adhered to our proposal, as well as the Commander of Nave Palinuro. It is difficult to imagine a better way to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Palermo-Montecarlo.”
An interesting fleet is taking shape today. Starting with Intuition, the 69-foot mini maxi of the French owner Vincent Beuvry with the skipper Yann Delplace (owner in turn of a glorious 12-meter International Tonnage originally French Kiss), both from Nice, with a crew of 16 sailors. Also important are the dimensions of Manticore, the Mylius 60 of Franz Wilhelm Baruffaldi Preis, plastic surgeon and skipper of the boat, often a protagonist in offshore races, and of the Swan 56 Azahar of the French owner Hervé Grunig, also experienced in the Middle Sea Race, and the TP52 Blue Moon Arkas of the Turkish owner Bernard Arkas, boat and crew, led by skipper Serat Altay, have already stood out in the first races of the season.
